Can we be in fellowship with God if we live in sin?

Well, David tried it. How did he fare? Psalm 32:3-5  describes David as he tried to make excuses and live in sin:
When I refused to confess my sin,
      my body wasted away,
and I groaned all day long.
Day and night your hand of discipline was heavy on me.
My strength evaporated like water in the summer heat.

Finally, I confessed all my sins to you
and stopped trying to hide my guilt.
I said to myself, “I will confess my rebellion to the Lord.”
And you forgave me! All my guilt is gone.”

David says his health was ruined and he was miserable, until he confessed his sin, and his rebellion to the Lord.

These days, there are many who teach that if you ‘only accept who you are’, in other words your sinful nature—just give in to your yearnings–that you will be much happier.  But, do you see a lot of happiness in our nation today? Suicide is at record levels. Especially amoung the youth in our country. They have no hope. They feel no joy. They are angry and violent.

You see, the misery we feel at our own wrong doing, is actually a gift from the Holy Spirit, to teach us right from wrong. To lead us away from things that will ultimately lead to a painful existance. The Bible says that when we deliberately violate our conscience, we to harden our hearts against the leading of the Holy Spirit.

Cling to your faith in Christ, and keep your conscience clear. For some people have deliberately violated their consciences; as a result, their faith has been shipwrecked.” –1 Timothy 1:19 (NLT)

If we do things we know are wrong, our hearts harden and then the voice of God is unable to get through. We are separated from God, and He can not teach and guide us. When God doesn’t guide us, then we are guided by our unquenchable human lusts. By our wicked hearts.

The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked:…”–Jeremiah 17:9 (KJV)

And God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.—-Genesis 6:5

But God shows his anger from heaven against all sinful, wicked people who suppress the truth by their wickedness“…….”Yes, they knew God, but they wouldn’t worship him as God or even give him thanks. And they began to think up foolish ideas of what God was like. As a result, their minds became dark and confused.  Claiming to
be wise, they instead became utter fools.   And instead of worshiping the glorious, ever-living God, they worshiped idols made to look like mere people and birds and animals and reptiles.

So God abandoned them to do whatever shameful things their

hearts desired. As a result, they did vile and degrading things with each other’s bodies.   They traded the truth about God for a lie. So they worshiped and served the things God created instead of the Creator himself, who is worthy of eternal praise! Amen.   That is why God abandoned them to their shameful desires. Even the women turned against the natural way to have sex and instead indulged in sex with each other.  And the men, instead of having normal sexual relations with women, burned with lust for each other. Men did shameful things with other men, and as a result of this sin, they suffered within themselves the penalty they deserved.

Since they thought it foolish to acknowledge God, he abandoned them to their foolish thinking and let them do things that should never be done.  Their lives became full of every kind of wickedness, sin, greed, hate, envy, murder, quarreling, deception, malicious behavior, and gossip. They are backstabbers, haters of God, insolent, proud, and boastful. They invent new ways of sinning, and they disobey their parents.  They refuse to understand, break their promises, are heartless, and have no mercy.  They know God’s justice requires that those who do these things deserve to die, yet they do them anyway. Worse yet, they encourage others to do them, too.” —Romans 1:18 and 21-32 (NLT)

So, the message is, don’t ignore your conscience and do what you know you shouldn’t! That includes over eating.

Listen, it is not what you BELIEVE, it is what you are willing to obey, that will shape your spiritual destiny. God says that “obedience is better than sacrifice.”

Is it a coincidence that the first sin of disobedience was eating something?! Some small area of disobedience– one bite of fruit–NOT a box of “Krispy Kremes”; not a cheese cake..just a bite of fruit–and paradise was lost! One teeny tiny  failure brought sin on the whole human race. Did God love Adam and Eve? Yes. But, the sin separated them from God–it hardened their hearts and filled them with pride. God could no longer walk with them.

They just could not skip ONE bite….just like us. One bite at a time comes between us and God.

Think about all the harm that came to man from eating:

  • Adam lost his blessing by eating
  • Esau lost his blessing by eating
  • In the wilderness, the children of Israel lost their blessing and their lives by eating. (Numb.11:33-34)
  • Eli’s sons lost their blessing, and their lives, because of their gluttony.

Yet, Daniel, Shadrack, Meschack and Abendigo refused to eat as those around them ate.  They refused to eat rich foods, but kept to a healthy diet of foods that gave them strength,  so that they would be better able to do God’s work. Their diet has been a testimony of faith for thousands of years.

But, put on the Lord Jesus Christ and make no provision for the flesh, to
 fulfill it’s lusts”…–Romans 13:14

Notice that the verse says, “lusts”…plural; because our flesh has many lusts that must be overcome, by the blood of Jesus. Sexual sin is not the only lust we must fight. Gluttony is the lust and desire of our flesh for more food than we need. It is greed for fleshly pleasure.
